The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on ICD-10-CM Coding

Description: Social determinants of health are an increasing focus of health care providers, insurers and public health agencies. These problems have existed for years but have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This session will define social determinants of health, identify the focus areas, and point out current efforts to assist health care consumers in overcoming these issues. New and existing ICD-10-CM codes will be discussed along with strategies for capturing and leveraging the data.

Speaker: Danita Forgey, MIS, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P has been extensively involved with coding and reimbursement issues for over 30 years as a hospital department manager, consultant and educator.  She is the former Program Director for the Health Information Administration Program at Indiana University and has held leadership positions in HIM professional associations nationally and at the state level.  She has given numerous presentations internationally, nationally and locally dealing with coding and reimbursement.  She is currently President of Danita Forgey Consulting LLC, a coding and reimbursement consulting company.
