LEAD: Leveraging Education & Auditing for the Development of Coders

Description: This session will assist coding leaders in making the case for investment in coding education and leadership. As leaders, we bring value when we can make strategic decisions with less resources.

This session will challenge participants to discard old processes and stagnant thinking and will equip them with the tools needed to build a team for the future who understands its role to support and defend the institution’s bottom line compliantly and ethically.

  • Define and challenge the role of coding management
  • Denote rationale for the value of ongoing coding education
  • Describe different strategies for execution of coding education programs

Speaker: Dianna Foley, RHIA, CCS, CDIP, CHPS is an HIM professional with over 25 years of experience. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and holds RHIA, CHPS, CDIP, and CCS certifications from AHIMA, along with being an AHIMA-approved ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer. Dianna has held many positions in HIM and is now an independent coding consultant. She previously served as the program director for Medical Coding and HIT at Eastern Gateway Community College. Dianna is an AHIMA-published author and has volunteered with AHIMA on projects including certification item writing, certification exam development, coding rapid design, and most recently has served on AHIMA’s nominating committee. She is a presenter on coding topics at the national, state, and regional levels and serves as OHIMA’s Education Coordinator. Dianna mentors new AHIMA members and also provides monthly educational lectures to coders and clinical documentation specialists. 

Speaker: Elizabeth Morgenroth, RHIA, CPC has 28 years of healthcare experience. In her current role of Director, HIM Revenue Cycle, she oversees the operational areas of Facility and professional fee coding, CDI and Quality Review. She served on the 2017-2018 AHIMA Student Advisory Council and served on the NHIMA Executive Board from 2019 – 2021 as its student representative.
