Challenges In Coding and Reporting Social Determinants of Health Data

Description: Social determinants of health are an increasing focus of health care providers, insurers and public health agencies. Data from providers is essential in prioritizing efforts to offer solutions to the social issues that affect patient wellbeing.

This session will define social determinants of health, outline the main areas of concern and describe efforts underway to provide help to health care consumers. New and existing ICD-10-CM codes will be discussed along with strategies for capturing and leveraging the data.

At the conclusion of this session the participant will be able to:

  • Define social determinants of health
  • Identify new ICD-10-CM codes used for social determinants of health
  • Discuss strategies for capturing and using social determinants of health data
  • Identify efforts underway to lessen the effects of social determinants of health

Speaker: Danita Forgey, MIS, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P has been extensively involved with coding and reimbursement  issues for over 30 years as a hospital department manager, consultant, and educator. She is the former Program Director for the Health Information Administration Program at Indiana University and has held leadership positions in HIM professional associations nationally and at the state level. She has given numerous presentations internationally, nationally, and locally dealing with coding and reimbursement. She is currently President of Danita Forgey Consulting LLC, a coding and reimbursement consulting company.
